Japanese Pistol Shrimp*
Resides : Substrate around rocks
Consumes : Fish food
Max Size : 2" or 50mm
Origin : Indian Ocean
Warnings : This species is not compatible with other shrimp.
This red and white shrimp (Alpheus bisincisus) gets its name from its coloration, which resembles the Japanese flag rather than its origin. It is also know as the Red Pistol Shrimp, but we decided not to use that name to prevent confusion with the smaller Randall's Pistol Shrimp we carry. Pistol shrimp get their name from the sound their pinchers make. The loud "pop" sound is used to frighten would be predators and stun tiny prey. You will be able to hear this in your house if you keep one of these shrimp. It can be as loud as someone snapping their fingers in the room the tank is in. These shrimp will create burrows in your aquarium just under the rocks, and pair with watchmen/prawn gobies. (Cryptocentrus spp.) When paired, the fish provides a look out service for the poor sighted shrimp, and the shrimp builds a burrow for the fish. However, this species is not compatible with other shrimp.
Grows to 2 inches, this species should be in a 10 gallon or larger tank with rock that is stable. It can be fed the same food you feed your fish.
